The strike called by nurses of Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi and Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College Hospital (MOSCMC) in Kolenchery continued into the fifth day as the managements of both hospitals failed to reach a consensus on the demands put forth by the nurses.

The talks held on Friday between the Lakeshore Hospital management and the striking nurses failed as the hospital management asked for more time to take a favourable decision on the demand for a salary hike. The nurses at the MOSCMC had already declared an indefinite strike after the talks held with the management failed on Thursday. The MOSCMC management had also sought more time to decide on the pay hike.

Nurses at the Little Flower Hospital are on strike demanding better facilities. Union leaders said that as many as 70 percent of the nurses are on strike. The nurses’ union had intimated about their strike plan to the hospital authorities earlier itself. The nurses allege that despite this, 4 persons were given notices by the hospital authorities and hence to protest against this, the nurses decided to strike work.

Nurses of Thrissur Elite hospital have taken up an indefinite strike against the management. A rise in the minimum wage, removal of bonded labour, introduction of working in shifts and to reinstate the dismissed nurses are some of the demands raised by the striking nurses. More than 250 nurses are participating in the strike.

The hospital is functioning with a minimum strength of 280 nurses. The nurses had earlier warned the management of a strike. Several meetings were held with the management and labour officer so as to arrive at an common understanding. The strike was imminent as all talks failed.

Nurses’ strike at Amrita continues

Talks between the hospital authorities at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and the leaders of the United Nurses’ Association failed to resolve the strike by a section of nurses that began on Tuesday at the hospital.

The nurses’ organisation, in addition to the demands of salary hike and other benefits, was asking for giving up the legal action against the nurse who was dismissed from service on Tuesday, and that was not acceptable, according to the hospital spokesperson. The strike began on Tuesday afternoon, after the association leaders, who had arrived at the hospital to discuss matters of a dismissal and a transfer of two nurses, were beaten up allegedly by the staff at the hospital.

The nurses’ strike at the Mother Hospital in Thrissur took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as the police forcibly arrested hundreds of agitating nurses when they tried to block the entrances to the hospital.

Tension prevailed in front of the hospital in the morning when the striking nurses stopped the patients, doctors and hospital workers from entering the hospital by blocking both the entrances to the hospital.
